Class Profiles

Oolu class comprise of youngest children in the school. Children in the Oolu class learn the letters of the Sinhala language. They learn how to write Sinhala alphabet, how to pronounce the letters and the simple words starting with particular letter. They also learn numbers, colours, shapes, words engage with day to day activities, good habits and how to be a responsible kid.

To make the learning more interesting these small kids engage in various activities such as listening to kids Sinhala stories, watching kids Sinhala videos and learning kids Sinhala songs & nursery rhymes. Sometimes action songs.

Once they learn all the Basic letters, they are given flash cards with letters to make 2-3 letter words & write them in their own. Last but not least they will learn how to write their name in Sinhala & write that in the White board on the last day of the year.

We all know how the strong foundation important for a house similarly giving strong foundation about Sinhala language and Sri Lankan culture is much important to small kids and it will remain with them forever. Oolu class we are trying to achieve that objective while touching small minds.

This is the third level of QCAA (LOTE) Curriculum of Yasodhara Sinhala Language School. Upon completing this course the students will be enrolled to fourth level (Araliya Class).

Pre-requisites: Students who have completed Manel Class or students who can read sentences and write words are eligible to join this class.

Class objectives:

  • Write simple sentences in grammatically correct way
  • Reading and comprehension
  • Improve their speaking skills through class conversations
  • Improve their listening skills
  • Improve their vocabulary and spellings

Class duration: Class is designed to complete in two terms and successful candidate will be assigned next class level based on performance.

Study Materials: Under the third level curriculum we use two text books:

Text Book 1: Entry Point –Year-5 –Kumudhu

Main objective of doing this book is to improve students’ reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Main topics covers under this book are as follows:

Weekend Fun: Learning about fun activities and how they spend their week.

  • Reading and comprehension
  • Writing simple sentences correctly
  • Improving speaking skills by giving them to explain their experiences in connection with the topics
  • Listening to the teacher and answering to questions
  • Explain the meaning of words to improve vocabulary

Eating Around the World: Learning about different types of foods in the world.

  • Reading and comprehension
  • Writing simple sentences correctly
  • Improving their speaking skills through class conversations
  • Make them participate in practical activities like cooking and drama
  • Explain the meaning of words to improve vocabulary

 

Past and Present: Learning about the way of life (transportation modes, clothes, toys and house hold items) in the past and present.

Folktales: Learning about folktales around the world.

Text Book2: Sinhala for Grade 3 in International Schools

Main objective of doing this book is to improve students’ knowledge of consonants and vowel sounds.

Araliya class is the 4th level of Yasodhara Sinhala Language School. Students in this class are equivalent to year 6 of the normal schooling curriculum or students who have completed the previous level in Yasodhara Sinhala School. Alternatively, students can also be accepted to this class if they meet the pre-requisites based on their current Sinhala reading and writing skills. Upon completing this class, students will progress to Namal class, which is level 5 of Yasodhara Sinhala Language School.

Pre-requisites: Araliya class accepts students who have completed the Kumudu class (Level 3) or students who meet the following criteria:

  • Students who are able to read basic Sinhalese text and understand their meaning to answer simple questions
  • Students who are able to write grammatical sentences in Sinhalese to present answers and ideas
  • Students who can speak Sinhalese to some extent to be able to participate in class discussions and present simple presentations in Sinhalese

Class objectives: Our class objective is to develop further on students’ current ability to speak, read, write and count in Sinhalese and to improve their knowledge on Sinhalese language. With frequent reading, writing and speaking tasks, we aim to get students to be comfortable in correctly using the Sinhalese language in everyday use. With these objectives in mind, Araliya class will cover 4 units throughout its duration:

  • Term 1: Animals
  • Term 2: Weather
  • Term 3: Fun with books
  • Term 4: Meeting other cultures

Class duration: One Year.

Next level: Level 5 – Namal Class.

Successful students in Araliya class will progress to the Namal Class. Students who perform exceptionally can be promoted to another class level based on their abilities.

The seventh level on the Yasodhara Sinhala School is named as Saman. Majority of the students in Saman class is of grade seven in mainstream school.

Pre-requisites: Students who have successfully completed the Namal class will be promoted to Saman class. Students, in grade 7 in mainstream school, who possess the following skills in Sinhala language are eligible to join the Saman class.

  • Able to read and comprehend simple story/document
  • Able to write simple sentences, essays/composition in
  • Able to talk in simple Sinhala fluently
  • Able to understand and respond fluently by listening to general dialogue

Class objectives: During the year in Saman class, following key units are focused.

  • Term 1: folk music (ජන සංගීතය සහ ජන කවි)
  • Term 2: buying and selling (මිලදී ගැනීම සහ විකිණීම)
  • Term 3: something to wear (ඇදුම් පැළදුම්)
  • Term 4: food (ආහාරපාන)

It is intended to develop the understanding of the topic specific vocabulary and the relationship of them to the Sri Lankan context. Aligning with the units, reading & comprehension, speaking, writing and listening skills are developed. Finally, two tests are conducted at the end of two semesters and students who successfully complete the above skills will be promoted to the level 8/ Sepalika class.



Class duration: Saman Class is aimed for a one academic year with four terms which run along with the mainstream school terms.

This is the most senior class of Yasodhara Sinhala School.

Pre-requisites: Students should have basic skills in all four areas of language learning, reading, speaking, writing and speaking, preferably successfully completed Year 10 equivalent level at the school (Sal Class). Newly joined students to the school who are in mainstream school Year 11 or 12 can be in this class provided that the student has skills in four basic areas of language learning by completing a small test which tests all four areas.

Class objectives: To follow the Victorian Sinhala Language curriculum and provided study guide and to prepare our students for the same VCE Sinhala Examination from Queensland when Sinhala language is added as a recognised language to Queensland senior curriculum.

Assessments: One assessment piece for each semester. Semester 1 covering Listening and Writing and Semester 2 covering Reading and Speaking.
The Express 1 class is for the students beginning their journey to learn the Sinhala language.

In Express 1 class, the students can learn how to read, write and pronounce Sinhala alphabet starting from letter “අ”.

Structured test books and interactive session will enable students to acquire basic knowledge and lay a strong foundation for their further studies on the Sinhala language.

After completing the class program successfully, the students can enrol into Express 2 class.

Pre-requisites: There is no prerequisite to enrol into the Express 1 class. Any student willing to learn Sinhala but cannot read and write Sinhala letter are welcome to enrol into this class.

Class objectives: Teach the student to read, write and pronounce Sinhala alphabet and related basic words.
 

Class duration: The class syllabus is designed to complete over a period of 6 months.
This is the second level of the intensive program focused on up skilling the newly joined students of any age group who are not up to the speed with basic Sinhala reading and writing skills. Upon completing this course the students will be enrolled to the YSS level appropriate to their age.

Pre-requisites: Students those who have basic understanding of Sinhala consonant and vowels / or those who have completed Express class-1 are eligible to joined this class. They should be able to read and write basic letters (consonants and vowels).

Class objectives: In Sinhala when you add strokes ” PILI” to the consonants its pronunciation or sound varies from its original form.

During the class you will learn how to add strokes/ pili to the consonants, how to pronounce different forms of letters, write and read simple words using above letters.

Class duration: Class is designed to complete in two terms and successful candidate will be assigned to next class level based on performance.
